One of my most vivid stories from my childhood in New Zealand (Aotearoa) is the Maori legend of how all came to be. In the beginning Ranganui (the sky) and Papatūānuku (the land) were joined together. Their children were born in darkness and there for pushed the mother and father apart to allow light to come into the world. The weather today shows us how they feel, the mist is the mother sending her love and the rain is the tears of Ranganui.
I miss the rolling hills, endless mountain ranges, thundering coasts, crispy air and overall vastness of New Zealand often, and knowing this legend and its history gives it all an even greater meaning.
